About
The Provident Potato is a blog devoted to cooking and eating the foods grown right in your own backyard (or nearby, if you live in a small city apartment like I do!) I’m not militant about the local movement–I prefer a more realistic do-what-you-can mentality (do a little, do a lot, just do something!) I buy most of my fresh goods (meat, vegetables, and eggs) from my local farmer’s market, and obtain dairy, cheese, and everything else from local sources whenever they are available. In addition to providing seasonal recipes, it is my goal to help readers learn about the ingredients I’m using. Key culinary techniques are also addressed to help the novice cook–because when you know how to work with what you have at any given time (or season), you can eat better, even on a budget.
Julia Reed is a writer, photographer, and documentary filmmaker living in Los Angeles, California. She earned her chops working on the line in a Vermont restaurant that utilized local, in-season ingredients, but she has always preferred the home kitchen. She lives with her amazing boyfriend (and self-appointed quality control specialist) Jeremy, and their Boston Terrier, Izzy.
